Biostatistics and Epidemiology

** This Unit is Currently Not Active (Pending Extramural Funding) **

The Biostatistics and Epidemiology Unit (BEU) will provide CCTS investigators with wide-ranging and cost-effective biostatistics and epidemiology research support services. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing study design and data analytic methods assistance to CCTS investigators;
  • Providing data collection and data management support for research projects; and,
  • Conducting data analysis and documenting data analysis results.

Resource & Services

  • Study Design & Analytic Methods: consult on issues such as hypothesis specification and equipoise, type I and II errors, sample size, power and effect sizes, randomized and nonrandomized approaches and potentials for bias, and stage I, II, III, and IV clinical trial designs
  • Data Collection Resources: use of resources such as the Computer Aided Telephone Interviewing (CATI) system and the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system
  • Data Management Support: data file conversion to files formats such as SAS or other formats, formalizing data dictionaries, adjusting long text variable labels to reflect shorter and more concise standards, conducting case-by-case and variable-by-variable data screening, and data editing to assure correct coding and to assure data quality before formal statistical analysis efforts
  • Data Analysis: integrate statistical analysis approach with the design and hypothesis
